The Hinterland Contemporary Landscape Art Prize is open to artists living and working within Queensland, who would like to engage with the Sunshine Coast Hinterland’s unique landscape.

Open to all mediums, this contemporary art prize will reward thoughtful, technical, and conceptual work, as well as innovative submissions that extend the possibilities of the genre.

Entries close Friday 31 January 2025.

Eligibility Criteria

The Hinterland Contemporary Landscape Art Prize has been launched to encourage and promote excellence in Contemporary Landscape Art, whilst inviting artists to consider to the unique landscape of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The word “contemporary” can be defined as non-traditional landscape painting, as well as artwork utilising other mediums that push the boundaries of genre.

We are encouraging artists to take a more conceptual approach to representing the landscape, and invite entries in the mediums of painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, instillation, found object, video and photography, and digital art.

Entries that best adhere to the above brief, and most successfully meet the Judging Criteria (See Judging and Exhibition Criteria, Point 8 below), will be accepted for the exhibition.

1. The entry must be completed by an artist living and working in Queensland.

2. There are two stages to entry:

  1. Online submissions are invited and attract a fee of $30.
  2. Entries that are selected for the exhibition and are therefore eligible to win, attract a further $20 fee for inclusion.

3. The entry must be the original work of the artist.

4. Each artist is limited to up to 3 entries.

5. Artworks must have been completed within the three year period of the closing date.

6. Entries must be submitted via online entry only. Entrants will be asked for the artists’ details:

  • Artist name, artwork title, size, medium and price
  • A 50 word statement about the work
  • A JPEG image of the work (files should not exceed 4MB).
  • A non-refundable $30 entry fee (including GST) must also be paid either online using a credit card. Entries will not be accepted until entry fee has been received.
  • A second non-refundable exhibition fee of $20 will be required for those artists chosen to be included in the exhibition and be eligible for the prize.

7. Entries must be received by 11.59pm Friday 31 January 2025.

8. The competition is open to all forms of 2D and 3D artwork including, but not limited to, all paint mediums, drawings, digital works, works on paper,  photography and video, sculpture and installation.

9. The size of the 2D work must not exceed 180cm in height or width, including frame.

10. The size of 3D works are negotiable depending on space, however larger works (over 200cm) should be able to be placed outdoors and weatherproof.

11. Multi-panel pieces are accepted and regarded as one work but must not exceed 183cm total. Clear instructions must be provided for installation if selected.

12. All entries must be for sale and The Zone Gallery will retain a 30% commission in the event of the work being sold.

Judging and Exhibition Criteria

The judging process will consist of two rounds. In the first round, judges will review the submitted images and select the finalist works for exhibition. Round two will be the final selection of winning works. The judges’ decisions are final and not subject to negotiation.

  1. There will be two rounds of judging. In the first round of pre-selection, the judges will select finalist works for exhibition from the images provided and finalists shall be notified by Monday 10 February.
  2. Artworks selected for exhibition will be required to be delivered to The Zone Gallery, 89 McCarthy Road Maleny Qld 4552 between 10am–5pm on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 February at the artists’ expense.
  3. Entries must be suitably framed for hanging and must have ‘D’ rings and hanging wire. Artists will be required to install their own artwork if the work requires specific requirements for display.
  4. Entries must be clearly labelled on the back with:
    – Artist’s name
    – Address
    – Phone number
    – Title of work
    – Year of completion
    – Medium
    – Price
  5. Finalists’ artworks must be available for the duration of the exhibition from Saturday 1 March until Sunday 16 March 2025.
  6. Reasonable care will be taken by the gallery in handling the artwork however neither the trust nor the gallery will be responsible for any loss or damage whatsoever caused to any work while in its custody. Insurance for the artwork during the exhibition and in transit remains the responsibility of the artist.
  7. Finalist works will be judged by a panel of judges. The panel will include an external judge, an established and practicing artist and a Gallery Director.
  8. Judging criteria is based on three equally evaluated criteria of: Conceptual development and realisation, creativity in design and imagination, technical skill in execution.
  9. The judges’ decision will be final and no negotiation will be entered into.
  10. The winner of the $10,000 first prize will be announced at the official opening on Saturday 1 March 2024.
  11. By entering, the artist consents to images of their work being reproduced and their biographical information used for the purposes of advertising and publicising the exhibition and for catalogue production.
  12. At the conclusion of the exhibition all unsold works must be collected from The Zone Gallery, 89 McCarthy Road Maleny Qld 4552 between 10am–5pm on Monday 17 March 2025 at the artists’ expense.
  13. Any works not collected within the time specified will be stored at The Zone Gallery and in the absence of appropriate arrangements at the expiry of a further one month will be deemed to be the property of The Zone Gallery and may be sold or otherwise disposed of by the trust at their discretion.
  14. Payment to artists for sold works will be processed within one month of the closure of the exhibition.
  15. The gallery reserves the right to authorise a 10% discount of sales where required.
